10-29-14 wi governor-investigation

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The liberal Center for Media and Democracy is asking the Internal Revenue Service to investigate the conservative group at the center of the John Doe investigation into Gov. Scott Walker’s 2012 recall campaign.  The Wisconsin Club for Growth filed as a tax-exempt organization in 2011 and 2012 and told the IRS it spent nothing for political purposes.  The Center for Media and Democracy’s complaint says the Club for Growth actually spent nearly all of the $20 million it raised to help elect Republican candidates in the Wisconsin Senate and gubernatorial recall elections. IRS rules say tax-exempt groups are allowed to be involved in political activity, as long as it’s not their primary focus.  Club for Growth attorney Andrew Grossman says the liberal center is “trying to silence political speech.”
