Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt has announced he is running for re-election. Schmidt is running for his second term. Schmidt says the biggest challenge facing his department in his first term has been dealing with the heroin epidemicand says his focus will continue to be education and awareness. Schmidt says a new records management system has also been implemented during his first term in office. Schmidt says overall he believes Dodge County is a safe place to live. “I think it is yes,” Schmidt told WFDL news. “…certainly safer than those bigger cities. Do we have our problems in Dodge County? Absolutely. Everywhere has problems but I think we have a safe community.” Schmidt started in law enforcement in 2000 as a Winneconne police officer. He started as a Dodge County sheriff’s deputy in 2004 and was promoted to patrol sergeant in 2012.
