11-25-19 wisconsin gun deer season opens this weekend

Wisconsin’s nine day gun deer season got underway this weekend.  The season will run until just after sunset on December 1.  Wisconsin DNR Chief Warden Todd Schaller says hunters will be allowed to kill antlerless deer in ever county for the first time in a decade, a sign that the herd is robust across the state.  Schaller says hunter safety is the number one priority.   “First and foremost are the rules of firearm safety.  Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded, always point the muzzle in a safe direction, being sure of your target and what’s before and after it, and keeping your finger off the trigger,”  Schaller told WFDL news.   “Knowing them, practicing and doing that we would have an accident-free season.”   The DNR is encouraging hunters to dispose of carcasses in landfills or in trash bins the agency has placed around the state to slow the spread of chronic wasting disease.   The department is also asking hunters to turn in deer heads for CWD testing.
