Town of Byron veterans will once again be honored at the annual Memorial Day tribute on May 27, 2024, at the Byron Town Hall and Veterans Memorial. Doors to the hall will be open from 8 am to 11 am for an open house featuring military and historical exhibits. The outdoor program begins at 9:30 am with a keynote address by Eleanor Rhodes on the significance of Memorial Day from a young person’s perspective. Ms. Rhodes, a Lomira High School student, is the 2024 second runner-up in the American Legion State Oratorical contest. American Legion Post #347 of Lomira and VFW Post 8092 of Oakfield will conduct a color guard/rifle squad salute and a roll call of the 112 veterans laid to rest at Bethel, Byron, and St. John’s cemeteries in the Town of Byron. The outdoor portion of the program will end with “Taps” and a bagpipe reflection performed by Dr. Joseph Haak. The Town of Byron Veterans Memorial was dedicated on May 30, 2005 to honor the men and women from the Town of Byron who served our country in war and peace. The Veterans Memorial Committee continues its research for names of veterans who lived or are laid to rest in the Town of Byron. This year’s Fond du Lac Memorial Day parade will be hosted by the Disabled American Veterans. The Parade and ceremony will be conducted on Monday, May 27 th , 2024 with the parade staging at the Fives parking lot at 8:45-9:55am and the Parade beginning at 10am on the corner of Rees and Main Streets. The parade will go south on Main Street and end at Veterans Park. The Memorial Day Ceremony will commence at Veterans Park immediately following the parade at 11:30am. The Key Note Speaker for the Ceremony is Retired Master Gunnery Sergeant Doug Fraser, United States Marine Corps. Organizations desiring to be in the parade must contact the Fond du Lac County Veterans Service Office at 920-929-3117 or 920-929-3120 or email veterans@fdlco.wi.gov. All organizations in parade must be themed toward the meaning of Memorial Day. No candy or other items may be handed out during the parade. Deadline to request to be in the parade is Wednesday May 22nd , 2024. Out of respect for all those that have died for our country, we request that NO POLITICAL or PROTEST activities be conducted during the parade.
