11-16-23 great american smokeout

Thursday is the Great American Smokeout.  The event, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, encourages people who currently smoke to quit, even if its just for one day.  Tobacco Prevention and Control Program assistant with the East Central Alliance for Nicotine Prevention, Laura Nikielski, says the first Great American Smokeout helped nearly 1 million people quit smoking for one day.  “1976 was the first one in California, youth starting a grassroots movement,”  Nikielski told WFDL news.  “Let’s be real, in 1976 I’m sure alot of people were smoking everywhere.”  Nikielski says today if you are ready to quit there are a lot of places you can go for help.  The Tobacco Quit Line provides free help and medications.  That number is  1-800-QUIT-NOW.
